Songs of Nat, Nina, and Ray

"We can’t turn away when Bruce is on stage. His presence is simultaneously commanding and approachable. His joy is contagious...His voice is his horn, and he can swing like Goodman, spin and spiral like Parker, or levitate like Coltrane.”

-- Andrea Canter, Jazz Police and Jazz Ink

"When pianist Daugherty decides to turn up the energy, she’s hard to beat, the idiosyncrasies of her harmonic sense enriched by a dynamic approach to rhythm and a robust way of addressing the full expanse of the keyboard."

                                      -- Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Tonight’s show, "The Music of Nat, Nina and Ray," will explore the work of Nat “King” Cole, Nina Simone, and Ray Charles. Each artist was a genre-bending pioneer who began work first as a pianist, then attained stardom when they added their own inimitable voices. As well, each lended their own unique contributions to the social developments of the time. This is music you will feel deeply, delivered by artists who love the material.

Better Together is a diverse group of top-level musical souls on a journey to unite people around amazing music and good vibes. Featuring vocalist Bruce A. Henry (“bell-pure voice”—Miami Herald), guitarist Henry Johnson (“impressive”—L.A. Times), pianist Jo Ann Daugherty (“★★★★”—Downbeat), acoustic bassist Joshua Ramos (Ramsey Lewis), and drummer Ryan Bennett, the band taps into the universal power of music to bring people together during these times when we need a common bridge. Past shows have included sold-out nights featuring tributes to Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, and Ray Charles.

Members of the band perform in the top echelons of the music industry: at festivals, concert halls and clubs worldwide; alongside masters of jazz (Ramsey Lewis, Stanley Turrentine, Nancy Wilson, and more); on national television (HBO, Disney, PBS broadcast specials, Empire); touring shows (Motown: the Musical, Jersey Boys), on critically acclaimed solo records—and that’s just scratching the surface.
