CHAD MCCULLOUGH QUARTET
“He is a rare instrumentalist who makes each note sound as if it were imbued with a deeper meaning. Certainly a player with great chops, his approach is one that is measured and deliberate, often introspective, sometimes gorgeously melancholic, and one that employs a continuity of mood and atmosphere that the best recordings have.”
– Dan McClenaghan
Chad McCullough - trumpet
Ryan Cohan - piano
John Sims - bass
Greg Artry - drums
Trumpeter Chad McCullough lovingly performs the music of one of the true "musician's musician" in trumpeter Kenny Dorham for one night in May.
McKinley Howard "Kenny" Dorham (1924-1972) released 19 albums as a leader, and over 50 more as a sideman with jazz luminaries including Joe Henderson, Max Roach, Thelonius Monk, Andrew Hill, and countless others. Many of his compositions are firmly established in the jazz cannon, and are some of the most instantly recognizable melodies of the last Century.
Dorham frequently explored his original compositions and standards in a quartet format, and that setting was the inspiration for this night of music, as Chad McCullough and his band recreate some of the most well-known classics, and some of the lesser-known gems.
