"...a suave fusion between European and American jazz traditions that is elegant and upbeat, yet sensitive and lyrical."  -- Andrea Cunningham, City of Evanston’s Cultural Arts

Fumee: noun smoke, smolder. Is there anything more French? Bandleader and vocalist Christy Bennett named the band after bringing together a group of musicians to perform music in a style inspired by Django Reinhardt. Classically trained, her mastery of romance languages as well as her instrument informed her choice of repertoire for the group. Performing music of the past, often rare hidden gems and music from around the world, Bennett combined a love of old things with a passion for making great music. The Fumee lineup includes a rotating cast of some of the best musicians Chicago has to offer.

In 2017, Fumée celebrated the release of Lost Lyrics: the Music of Django Reinhardt. A recording that included French, rarely heard lyrics composed by Reinhardt contemporaries. The first complete recording of it’s kind included world renowned jazz mandolinist Don Stiernberg, legendary accordionist Don Stille, and internationally acclaimed horn players Juli Wood and Art Davis. The result is “"...a suave fusion between European and American jazz traditions that is elegant and upbeat, yet sensitive and lyrical." -- Andrea Cunningham, City of Evanston’s Cultural Arts.

Since the release of Lost Lyrics, Bennett has been collecting the work of Irene Higginbotham, songwriter of Good Morning Heartache and niece of J. C. Higginbotham. The album Good Morning Heartache: the Music of Irene Higginbotham will be released in 2022. Fumée has been performing the music of lesser-known songwriters that Bennett has traveled across the US to uncover. Focusing on female songwriters and BIPOC, Bennett unearths music and the stories of the fascinating people that created it. Finding connections between the composers of these rare finds and the well-known composers and lyricists of the Great American Songbook has become a passion and a quest.

Regularly performing throughout Chicago, Bennett has performed at the Green Mill, the Jazz Showcase, the Coq D’or, the Hungry Brain and performs weekly with Fumée at the Lawrence House and Rogers Park Social. She has released recordings with guitarist Casey Nielsen, an album of original compositions with her quintet as well as four recordings  with her band Fumée.
