Julia Danielle Smulson
Up-and-coming Chicago vocalist, arranger, educator, and composer Julia takes the genre of what is known as jazz to new capacities by adding her own flavor of soul.
Julia has a strong background in classical training as she grew up in the traveling and nationally competing Campanella Children’s Choir, as well as privately studying with Northwestern University Voice and Opera professor, Theresa Brancaccio. Julia is also an alum of the Chicago a Cappella: High School Apprenticeship Program from 2018-2019.
Julia has been announced as the 2022 International Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition Winner where, for part of her prize, she performed with the Tierney Sutton Band at the infamous Blues Alley Jazz Club. Julia has had the opportunity to perform alongside vocalist Tierney Sutton, saxophonist Sharel Cassity, bassist Clark Sommers, drummer Isaiah Spencer, saxophonist Isaiah Collier, and bassist Dennis Carroll. Julia has also become an avid performer around the Chicagoland area in the most prominent and beloved jazz clubs in town: The Jazz Showcase, Andy’s Jazz Club, Elastic Arts, and The Fulton Street Collective, as well as popular jazz clubs in New York City, Washington D.C., and Madison, Wisconsin.
Julia takes part in rising Chicago pianist Joe Power’s group, performing in different venues of the fusion scene such as Lincoln Hall, Martyrs, Schubas Tavern, GMan Tavern and The Golden Dagger. Julia continues her deep study and love for Black American Music, vocal technique, and pedagogy with Dana Hall, Typhanie Monique Coller, and Scott Ramsay, completing her third year at DePaul University as a Jazz Voice Studies Major.
