Petra's Recession Seven - A tribute to Bob Ojeda (1941-2020)

When musicians die in New Orleans, the streets fill with music to celebrate the person’s life as much as a mourning of his death. In that spirit, Petra's Recession Seven will pay tribute to their late bandmate and friend, trumpeter Bob Ojeda. A man of few words, Bob "spoke" eloquently through his trumpet and thus, a musical celebration of his life seems quite fitting.

Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as a "masterful trumpeter, inventive arranger, creative composer and mentor," Chicago native Bob Ojeda enjoyed an international music career. Stan Kenton recruited Ojeda when he was just 18 years old. Bandleaders Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton and Benny Carter featured him in their trumpet sections.  In the 1970s, Ojeda moved to Los Angeles and became an active freelance trumpeter and studio musician. There he wrote jingles for radio, TV, and film. He played trumpet in the rock musical "Hair" and even played with the Rolling Stones. In the 1980s, Ojeda became the staff arranger for Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show." Ojeda toured, recorded and wrote arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra from 1985 to 2001. After moving back to Chicago in his later years, Bob enjoyed playing as part of the Recession Seven which he often cited as the best band in Chicago.

At the start of the Great Recession in September 2008, Petra's Recession Seven, a Chicago-style early swing/trad jazz band was born.  This seven piece ensemble features an all-star line up of internationally known Chicago veterans including trombonist Russ Phillips, clarinetist Eric Schneider, and trumpeter Art Davis.

Festival appearances include the 33rd annual Chicago Jazz Festival, the 34th, 35th & 37th annual Cedar Basin Jazz Festival, Fitzgerald's 29th annual American Music Festival, and the Illiana Club of Traditional Jazz's 40th anniversary Jazz Festival.

The band regularly travels to regional jazz societies such as the Juvae Jazz Society, the Madison Jazz Society, the Starr-Gennett Foundation, the "Masters of Swing" series at Cincinnati's Xavier University, the Lafayette Jazz Club, and the Indianapolis Jazz Club. The American Rag, in a review of the band's 2011 on location recording Live In Chicago praises "a killer of a band that grabs your attention and doesn't give it back until they are finished playing."
